The government will start to resurface the entire Avenida do Coronel Mesquita in phases on Monday, with the work to be carried out at night only because of which the thoroughfare will be open to traffic in the daytime during the period, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced yesterday.
An IAM statement yesterday underlined that the resurfacing is needed as the different sections of the avenue’s road surface have worn out to “varying degrees”.
The avenue will be resurfaced with a new type of asphalt that can raise the road surface’s durability, improve driving safety, and lower road noise, the statement said.
The resurfacing, which will be carried out in three phases, is scheduled to be completed on December 28, the statement said.
According to the statement, the resurfacing will be carried out between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. every night during the period except December 20, 21 and 22.
As the project will be carried out in a way that the original surface is scraped off in certain sections of the avenue after which the respective areas are then paved with the new asphalt, the resurfacing of the respective sections can be completed in a night every time, because of which the thoroughfare can reopen during the day during the project’s entire period, the statement said.
The statement noted that no extensive resurfacing has been carried out on the 900-metre-long one-way thoroughfare for many years, because of which the different sections of its road surface have worn out in “various degrees”.
The statement underlined that the bureau previously carried out many small-scale repairs on different sections of the avenue’s road surface, but the results “were not satisfactory”.
