The Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement yesterday that its Islands Emergency Department Station has been operating “smoothly” since its relocation to an area of the new Macao Union Hospital in Cotai on Thursday last week.
Macau’s largest hospital, the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), started its trial operation on Wednesday last week, i.e., December 20, which marked the 24th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).
The large-scale healthcare complex, aka Macao Union Hospital, is operated by PUMCH in collaboration with the Macau government. It is informally known as Cotai hospital due to it being located in south Cotai.
“Islands” is the official term referring to Taipa, Coloane and Cotai.
The Health Bureau’s Islands Emergency Department Station was relocated from an area of the private Macau University of Science and Technology’s (MUST) University Hospital in Taipa to the ground floor of the General Hospital tower of the Macao Union Hospital on Thursday last week, i.e., the day after the commencement of the Macao Union Hospital’s trial operation.
Yesterday’s statement noted that the operation mode of the new Islands Emergency Department Station is the same as the previous one at the MUST University Hospital.
The Islands Emergency Department Station is providing emergency outpatient treatment 24/7, but without a hospitalisation service, the statement noted.
The statement noted that those calling an ambulance are still being taken to the emergency department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, or the one at the private Kiang Wu Hospital, in the peninsula.
The statement also noted that the Macao Union Hospital has just started its trial operation, adding that in the future the Macao Union Hospital will operate a fully equipped emergency department.
This handout photo released by the Health Bureau (SSM) on Thursday last week shows the entrance of its new Islands Emergency Department Station at the General Hospital tower of the Macao Union Hospital in Cotai at that time.
