In two separate cases, a local woman and a man from the mainland have been arrested for theft, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect in the first case, surnamed Chio, is in her fifties. She told the police she’s jobless.
According to Leong, on December 27, a supermarket staff member reported to the police that upon Chio’s departure from the supermarket on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lou), the theft detection alarm was triggered. Subsequently, a bag of tea, worth 148 patacas was discovered in Chio’s handbag.
The bag of tea had not been paid for, Leong said, adding that Chio admitted to the crime.
In the second case, Leong identified the suspect as a mainland visitor surnamed Li in his forties. He also claimed to be jobless
According to Leong, an employee at a clothing shop on Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus discovered on December 28 that a T-shirt worth 4,116 patacas had been stolen. After reviewing CCTV footage, the staff discovered that Li had tried on a T-shirt in one of the fitting rooms but did not return it. Instead, he placed the T-shirt in his bag and left the shop without paying for it.
The police arrested Li in a hotel nearby on the same day. Under questioning, Li claimed that he had forgotten and accidentally placed the T-shirt in his bag without intending to steal it.
Chio and Li have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, according to Leong.
