The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has completed drawing up the new official standards for the use of food additives.
Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon and IAM Administrative Committee member Ung Sau Hong made the announcement during a press conference at Government Headquarters on Friday.
They pointed out that since 2017 the government has drawn up three separate administrative regulations on the standards for the use of three types of food additives, namely food colouring, sweeteners, and preservatives and antioxidants.
The three regulations took effect in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.
Administrative regulations, aka by-laws, do not require the legislature’s approval.
According to Cheong and Ung, the new administrative regulation, which will take effect on May 1, will integrate and upgrade the current standards listed by the three regulations on food colouring, sweeteners, and preservatives and antioxidants respectively. In addition, the new regulation will cover many other types of food additives commonly used in food products sold in Macau, such as emulsifier, acidity regulator, stabiliser, anticaking agent, flavour enhancer, and raising agent (aka leavening agent).
