An Indonesian maid and two men from the mainland have been arrested for separately stealing “laisee” envelopes, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said at a press conference yesterday.

In the first case, the maid surnamed Wiwik is in her twenties.

According to Cheong, a male resident reported to the police that eight “laisee” envelopes – aka red envelopes – containing about 650 patacas vanished from his bedroom, and he suspected that Wiwik, his domestic helper, had stolen them.

Later, the police discovered three banknotes in Wiwik’s possession, and she could not provide a credible explanation regarding the source of the banknotes.

In the second case, the suspects in their thirties are surnamed Hui and Wang. Both told the police that they are jobless.

According to Cheong, a local woman and man reported to the police on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, that their belongings had been stolen from their cars. The man lost seven red envelopes containing 2,000 patacas, while the woman lost a pair of earrings and several “laisee” envelops worth 1,550 patacas.

PSP officers made use of their citywide CCTV surveillance system and identified Hui and Wang, who were then apprehended on Sunday.

Several red envelopes and the earrings belonging to the victims were found on the suspects.

Wiwik, Hui and Wang have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, according to Cheong.

A “laisee” envelope is a gift of money given during the Chinese New Year or for special occasions such as weddings and birthdays.
