A mainlander has been arrested for usury, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 33-year-old suspect surnamed Ren told the police that he’s a worker. The male victim is also a mainlander.

According to Cheong, Ren met the victim at a casino in Cotai in the wee hours of Friday and lent him HK$25,000 to gamble, under the condition he return 25,000 yuan later and pay an additional HK$1,000 “tips” for the total of his winnings. Ren also took the victim’s identification documents.

After the victim lost all the money, he left the casino with Ren closely following him. The victim promptly approached a Public Security Police (PSP) officer outside the casino and reported the case to the police. Ren was arrested at the scene.

Ren has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a usury charge, according to Cheong.
