A man from the mainland has been arrested for allegedly robbing his ex-girlfriend’s mobile phone, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Xia, is in his thirties, claimed to be jobless.  The victim is a woman from the mainland under the age of 30.

According to Cheong’s statement, Xia on Sunday contacted the victim and told her that he was in Macau and had no place to stay. Out of kindness, the victim took Xia to her room in a hotel in Cotai.

Upon waking up, the victim discovered that Xia was holding her mobile phone and requested that he return it. However, Xia ignored her plea and left the room with the phone. The victim immediately pursued him and a confrontation ensued in the hotel lobby. During the altercation, the victim was pushed to the floor and sustained an injury to her hand. After Xia fled the scene, the victim reported the incident to the police.

Later that day, the police apprehended Xia in another hotel room in Cotai. During questioning, Xia claimed that the phone, valued at 8,000 yuan (8,980 patacas), was a gift he had given to the victim during their relationship, and he attempted to retrieve it as their relationship had ended.

Xia has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a robbery charge, Cheong said.
