The Municipal Affairs Bureau’s (IAM) urged members of the public in a statement yesterday that bird-watchers in the wetland next to Avenida da Praia in Taipa should avoid wearing brightly coloured clothes and making noises, so as to minimise the disturbance to their feathered friends there.

The bureau said that during the dry season, the shallow beach in the wetland increases in size and becomes a good place for various birds to forage, which attracts many shutterbugs and others to go and watch birds, according to the statement.

The reminder also urged birders not to use the flash on the camera when taking photographs, and told members of the public that anyone can go to the ecological trail there to watch the birds but without disturbing them.

The statement noted that seven black-faced spoonbills had been foraging in the wetland earlier this year, as well as other migratory birds that are rarely seen in Macau, including the ruddy-breasted crake (Zapornia fusca) and the grey-headed lapwing (Vanellus cinereus).

According to the statement, black-faced spoonbills are Class I protected animals in the mainland.
