The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a mainlander on Sunday for stealing money from a pair of trousers in a hotel guestroom, PSP spokeswoman Lai In Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Lai identified the suspect as a male surnamed Chen. He told the police that he’s jobless
According to Lai, the Public Security Police received a report on Sunday from a man saying that HK$1,760 had vanished from his trouser pocket. The victim had been staying in a hotel room on Rua da Felicidade and suspected that the money was stolen while he slept.
After scrutinising the building’s CCTV footage, Lai said, PSP officers identified the suspect who had entered the victim’s room. Chen was arrested later that day.
Under questioning, Chen admitted to the crime and said that he committed it after gambling all his money away, claiming that he had also gambled away all the money taken from the trouser pocket. Chen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Lai.
