The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a taxi driver in his sixties last Wednesday for defrauding a passenger from the mainland two months ago by giving her the wrong change, a PSP spokesperson said on Friday.
According to a PSP investigation, the female visitor took a cab in the morning of February 11 in Praça das Portas do Cerco (Barrier Gate Square) and got out at Rua do Almirante Costa Cabral, with a fare costing 42 patacas. She gave the cabbie a 500-pataca note, only realising afterwards that the driver shortchanged her by handing back only 55 patacas and HK$2 in cash.
The spokesperson said during Friday’s regular press conference that after scrutinising the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system and its taxi surveillance system, the Public Security Police identified the suspect as a local man surnamed Loi, who has been working as a cab driver for more than 10 years.
Loi was summoned to a police station last Wednesday for questioning, during which he confessed to the crime and told the police that he was willing to “compensate” the victim for her loss, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson noted that Loi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge.
