A fire broke out in a flat in Block 4 of Lago (Lake) Building, a subsidised home-ownership scheme (HOS) estate in Taipa, in the wee hours of yesterday, injuring two residents of the building, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement yesterday.

The statement said that a short circuit in the flat was the possible cause of the fire.

According to the statement, the blaze broke out at around 5 a.m. yesterday in the flat on the ninth floor of Block 4 of the HOS estate comprising six blocks located near the west side of Big Taipa Hill, aka Taipa Grande.

While “lago” means lake in Portuguese, Lago Building is known as Lakeside Building in Chinese.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze in a short time. About 150 residents, including the two injured, self-evacuated from the building during the fire, the statement said.

According to the statement, the two injured comprise a 44-year-old local woman who lives in the flat where the fire broke out and a 36-year-old local woman who lives on the 29th floor of the building.

First-degree burns

The 44-year-old woman sustained first-degree burns on her right forearm. She declined to be taken to hospital for further medical examination and treatment after receiving basic treatment from paramedics at the scene, the statement said.

According to the statement, the 36-year-old woman told paramedics that she felt unwell after inhaling smoke. She was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre on the peninsula for examination and treatment.

The statement also said that the flat was completely gutted by the blaze, which also partially damaged the balcony of a flat on the 10th floor.
