A man from the mainland has been arrested for blackmailing his female friend using a secretly recorded video of her showering in a hotel bathroom, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a press conference yesterday.

The 35-year-old suspect, surnamed Liang who claimed to be self-employed, had recorded the video of his friend, an engineer surnamed Yang, while they were staying in a Cotai hotel room last week.

According to Cheong, Yang first accused Liang of raping her on Friday. However, during the investigation, it was revealed that the two had consensual sex after arriving in Macau for gambling.

Afterwards, Liang sent Yang the secretly recorded shower video and blackmailed her, demanding she pay back the expenses of their trip. Out of fear, Yang gave Liang 2,200 yuan.

When Liang continued his blackmail attempts, out of anger, Yang falsely accused him of rape in a report to the police. Both were taken to a police station for questioning on Saturday.

Liang admitted to committing the blackmail, and police found the shower video of Yang on his phone during the investigation.

Liang and Yang have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where Liang faces charges of extortion and invasion of privacy, while Yang faces a charge of false accusation, according to Cheong.
