A man from the mainland has been arrested for short-changing another man in a currency exchange deal, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Chen, is in his forties. He told the police that he’s a businessman.
According to Kong, the victim from the mainland encountered Chen in a casino in Cotai on May 2 and agreed to exchange 45,000 yuan into HK$48,000. Chen counted his cash in front of the victim and asked him to transfer the yuan.
After receiving the 45,000 yuan by digital bank transfer, Chen gave the victim the cash and quickly left. Upon counting the money, the victim realised that he had only received HK$34,000, leading him to report the case to the police.
Chen was arrested on Sunday at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint. He denied the accusation.
Chen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where he faces a fraud charge, according to Kong.
