Macau’s outpatient consultation rose by 1.3 percent year on year to 1.95 million last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.
At the end of last year, Macau’s population stood at 683,700, according to official demographics.
Chinese medicine had the largest number of consultations (242,000, +8.3 percent), accounting for 12.4 percent, followed by Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation (237,000, similar to 2022), and Internal Medicine (225,000, +4.3 percent).
The number of emergency service recipients rose by 23.6 percent year on year to 461,000.
Primary health care establishments’ consultations grew by 20.9 percent to 3.79 million, of which private clinics made up 77.0 percent.
At the end of last year, Macau had five hospitals, including the Macao Union Hospital in Cotai, which started trial operations in December 2023. There were 732 primary health care establishments (such as public health centres and private clinics) in operation at the end of last year.
As of December 31, 2023, Macau had 1,980 doctors, 728 Chinese medicine doctors and herbalists, as well 2,980 nurses, i.e., 2.9 doctors, 1.1 Chinese medicine doctors and herbalists, and 4.4 nurses per 1,000 population.
