The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has discovered recently that a construction site in Nam Van had illegally used pipes to discharge unfiltered yellow slurry wastewater into the public underground sewer pipes, the bureau said in a statement yesterday.
IAM officials have stopped the discharge, the statement said, adding that it will impose penalties in accordance with the law.
The statement also said that it had asked the person in charge of the site to clean up the affected sewer pipes and initiate a CCTV inspection of the sewer pipes. No irregularities were found during the review on the following day.
IAM urged the construction sector to review its wastewater filtration equipment at construction sites and not to discharge liquid waste such as cement slurry into public sewers, so as to avoid affecting the normal discharge of stormwater wells and drains, the statement said.
In addition, according to the statement, in the first quarter of this year, the bureau conducted nearly 200 inspections at construction sites and recorded eight cases of suspected unauthorised discharges, which is lower than the 11 cases in the same period last year, indicating that the sector’s awareness of the need to control drainage at construction sites has been enhanced.
Members of the public can call the bureau’s hotline on 2833 7676 if they are aware of suspected illegal discharges into public places or sewers.
