Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced yesterday that its officers have recently caught two “parallel traders” attempting to smuggle 52 second-hand phones and 55 bottles of wine from Macau to the mainland separately.

According to Gongbei Customs, the first case was busted last Friday when customs officers at the Macau-Zhuhai Qingmao pedestrian border checkpoint intercepted a man who looked suspicious.

The officers seized a total of 52 used smartphones strapped around his waist, thighs and calves wrapped in plastic film and elastic bandages.

The second case, according to Gongbei Customs, occurred on May 9, when the driver of a Guangdong-Hong Kong dual-licence plate vehicle smuggled 55 bottles of wine into Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) checkpoint, with a total value of 191,000 patacas.

Upon further inspection, the customs officers discovered a total of 55 bottles of wine hidden in the vehicle’s boot, under the seats, and in the hidden compartment of the armrest box.

Gongbei Customs has fined the driver.

Gongbei Customs reminded members of the public to only carry items for their own use in reasonable quantities and in compliance with the relevant regulations, make truthful declarations to customs officers and be wary of requests by others to put the latter’s items into their luggage, and not to breach the law and regulations, just out of greed for small gains.
