Located at the junction of Avenida do Aeroporto and Rua de Ténis in Cotai, the government plot, covering an area of 94,000 square metres with Rua de Ténis to the north and Avenida do Aeroporto to the northeast, has been selected by the government as the temporary “Macau Open-Air Performance Venue”, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) announced yesterday, adding that the facility was expected to start operating next year.

The site lies near the Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) and Lisboeta resorts as well as the government-owned Macau East Asian Games Dome.

Yesterday’s IC statement pointed out that the venue, with a planned capacity for 50,000 spectators (about 7.4 percent of the current population), would create good conditions for the staging of large-scale outdoor performances in Macau and thus attracting more international shows to the city, adding that various public entities are currently preparing the design proposal and the tendering of the construction works for the performance area.

Equipped with basic and ancillary facilities for holding large-scale performances, the statement said, the new venue was expected to introduce world-class performing arts programmes to Macau, attracting both domestic and non-local entities to plan and stage their large-scale outdoor cultural festivals here, performing arts programmes and activities in Macau.

The site has been selected after taking into account Macau’s spatial conditions and striking a balance between various factors, such as geographical location, according to the statement.
