A non-resident worker (NRW) from the mainland has been arrested for stealing 85,000 patacas from a pharmacy where he worked, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Wai Lok said at a press briefing yesterday.

The 33-year-old suspect surnamed Ban worked as a salesman in the pharmacy for three months.

According to Ho, the pharmacy reported to the police on Sunday that 76,000 patacas and 8,000 yuan had vanished from its cash register. On the same day, Ban turned himself in.

Under questioning, Ban confessed to stealing the money on eight occasions last Thursday and Sunday for gambling. He told the police that he surreptitiously used his own duplicate keys to enter the shop after it had closed.

He claimed to have gambled away all the stolen money.

Ban has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Ho.
