A male non-resident worker (NRW) was arrested in Travessa da Areia Preta on Tuesday after the Public Security Police (PSP) found 10 sneak photos and two videos of women’s legs on his phone, but the suspect in his thirties, who denied taking clandestine photos of the victims, claimed to have forgotten when and where the photos were taken, PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said yesterday.
According to Cheong, on June 30, a local woman in her thirties on her way to the Qingmao checkpoint in Ilha Verde via a footbridge felt being touched by a “hard object” on her calves from behind, so she turned around to check it out. Unexpectedly, she found a man holding a mobile phone with a flashlight on. The man fled the scene as soon as the victim discovered him, so the victim immediately reported the case to the Public Security Police.
Thanks to the police forces’ citywide CCTV surveillance system, the Public Security Police identified the suspect as a male surnamed Wong living in a residential building on Travessa da Areia Preta, Cheong said during yesterday’s regular press conference, adding that Wong denied committing the offence, but PSP officers found 10 photographs and two videos on his mobile phone dated 9 p.m. on July 4, showing women’s legs.
Wong, who told the police that he works as a waiter, has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation, facing sexual harassment and invasion of privacy charges. Cheong did not disclose the suspect’s nationality.
This undated handout photo provided by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows the male suspect being escorted by a PSP officer to the No. 2 PSP station on Avenida do Almirante Lacerda in the northern district.
