A local man and a mainland woman who married last year were taken last week to a police station for questioning about their alleged sham marriage, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hon said yesterday.

Both suspects are in their thirties. The male suspect surnamed Ao is a taxi driver, while the female suspect surnamed Yuan is a masseuse.

According to Lai, while investigating Yuan for working illegally in Macau, the police discovered suspicious details about her marital status as she and Ao had never lived together as a married couple. As a result, they were summoned to a police station for questioning last week.

Under questioning, both individuals confessed to the crime. Yuan admitted that she had paid Ao 50,000 yuan, whom she had met at an entertainment venue in the mainland, to enter into a fake marriage with her. The purpose of this arrangement was to secure a family visit permit and engage in illegal work in Macau. The two registered their marriage in Hunan province last November.

The duo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of making false statements to the authorities.
