The woman who survived a family-of-four suicide pact in a hotel room in Cotai on Wednesday told the police yesterday that her family decided to take their own lives because her husband could not pay off his debts after his business had failed, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Tam Weng Keong said yesterday during a regular press briefing.

On Wednesday, three men and a woman were found unconscious in a Hotel Okura guestroom. Firemen later confirmed that two men had died at the scene, while another man and a woman were rushed to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.

In a PJ statement on Wednesday, the police identified the two people who died as a 52-year-old man and the couple’s 24-year-old son, and the two people who survived as a 45-year-old woman and their 20-year-old son. They are Indian nationals surnamed Lunawat.
