The “Macau Memory” Cultural and Historical Website, run by the government’s Macau Foundation (FM), today marks the fifth anniversary of its launch, with the foundation having now rolled out various celebratory activities to be held until December.

The foundation announced details of the activities in a statement yesterday.

The Macau Memory website (https://www.macaumemory.mo) is an online platform containing various forms of historical materials related to Macau for members of the public to access. The digitalised historical materials on the website include files and documents, books, newspapers and magazines, poems, inscriptions, pictures, maps, photographs, postcards, posters, stamps, audios and videos, among various others.

The Macau Memory website is available in Macau’s two official languages – Chinese and Portuguese.

Officially launched on August 6, 2019, the Macau Memory website is an ongoing large-scale cultural project that comprehensively integrates Macau’s historical resources from various sources into a platform. The foundation has continuously been collecting and organising various kinds of Macau-related historical and cultural materials from the past centuries and digitalising them so that members of the public can gain easy access to all these materials on the internet.

Yesterday’s statement said that from now until the end of the year, talks on various topics such as customs and traditions, urban planning, religious culture and community development will be held.

The statement said that starting now internet users will automatically enter a lucky draw after liking, posting comments on and subscribing Macau Memory’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Those who win the lucky draw will each be given two MACAU Pass cards of the Macau Memory limited edition, the statement said.

Details about the various talks and the lucky draw as well as all other upcoming activities will be announced on the Macau Memory website, its Facebook page and various other social media apps, according to the statement.

Award from UNESCO

The Macau Memory website won an award granted by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (WHITRAP) last month, the foundation said in a statement at that time.

According to last month’s statement, the Macau Memory project won an award under the 2024 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases (AWHEIC), which was announced during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi last month.

According to last month’s statement, the 2024 AWHEIC comprises 10 awards each for three categories, namely Star of Outstanding, Star of Discovery and Star of the Future. The statement said that the Macau Memory website has been granted a Star of Discovery award, the only project from Macau winning a 2024 AWHEIC award.

The foundation said last week that winning an AWHEIC award means that the Macau Memory project is fully recognised by the international community as an innovative online platform, rendering the website more popular internationally and making Macau’s “golden business card” as a culturally renowned city shine even brighter.
