The Chief Executive Electoral Affairs Commission (CAECE) yesterday trained its poll workers at the Macau Forum complex in Zape to prepare for the election of the Chief Executive Election Committee members, which will be held this Sunday.

For the 344 seats up for grabs in the 400-member Chief Executive Election Committee, 348 accepted candidates will compete to win a seat.

In addition to the Macau Forum in Zape, the nearby Macao Polytechnic University’s (MPU) Multi-Sport Pavilion in Zape and the Luso-Chinese Vocational and Technical School in Areia Preta district will also be used as polling stations for the election. Around 140 residents will serve as poll workers across the seven polling stations set up at the three voting locations, with each polling station allocated for the respective seven segments of the election committee.

The poll workers conducted a simulated election exercise, including familiarising themselves with the operation process of the polling stations, electronic voting and vote counting procedures, computer system operations, as well as protocols for dealing with unexpected events. The head of one the polling stations, Lo Pin Heng, introduced the training session to reporters yesterday morning at the complex.

Lo said the main purpose of yesterday’s training was to allow the poll workers in different positions to coordinate their tasks better on election day to ensure a smooth operation.

According to Lo, similar to the 2019 election, Sunday’s balloting will also use electronic voting to expedite the vote-counting process.

Lo underlined that there will be signage and guidance at the polling stations to remind voters of the procedures they need to follow during voting.

Around 6,200 voters have registered for Sunday’s secret ballot election of the Chief Executive Election Committee members. The voter turnout in the 2019 election was 87.2 percent.

Analysts expect the Chief Executive Election Committee to elect Macau’s next chief executive in mid-October.

Informed sources have told the Post that Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng will announce his re-election candidacy some time after Sunday’s election of the members of the Chief Executive Election Committee.
