The Macau Health Bureau (SSM) is urging residents to stay vigilant against dengue fever considering that locally transmitted cases of dengue fever have recently been recorded in Zhuhai and Hong Kong.

An SSM statement on Friday noted that dengue fever cases have been recorded in various cities in Guangdong Province this year, adding that Zhuhai reported this year’s first locally transmitted case of dengue fever on August 1.

The statement also noted that as of last week, Hong Kong had recorded 51 dengue fever cases this year, four of which were locally transmitted cases.

In addition, the SSM statement also reaffirmed that a number of Southeast Asian countries are being hard hit by the spread of dengue fever this year.

As of last week, according to the SSM statement, 10,913 cases of dengue fever had been recorded in Singapore this year, a year-on-year increase of 96.13 percent compared to the same period of last year, while 90,533 cases had been reported in Malaysia, a year-on-year increase of 22.87 percent. Vietnam had recorded 57,858 cases, a year-on-year increase of 44 percent, the statement said.

Moreover, the statement also said that Macau’s monthly ovitrap index stood at 59.8 percent last month, adding that since April, Macau’s monthly ovitrap index has been higher than the ones recorded in the same months last year, indicating an extensive distribution of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes (aka Asian tiger mosquitoes) across the city, the statement said.
