A couple from the mainland have been arrested for attempted burglary, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a special press conference yesterday.

The suspects are a 48-year-old man surnamed Li who owns a car repair shop in the mainland, and a 45-year-old woman surnamed Tang who told police that she is a worker.

According to Lei, the Judiciary Police received a referral from the Public Security Police (PSP) regarding a burglary case in July, which occurred in a second-floor flat in a residential building on Estrada de Cacilhas. The homeowner reported hearing a loud noise in his flat, after which he discovered a man attempting to break in through the window. Upon being noticed, the intruder fled by jumping to the first-floor platform.

The homeowner told the police that nothing was stolen but his window was broken. Another homeowner on the first floor of the building also suspected a burglary attempt but found nothing was missing from his flat.

The Judiciary Police soon identified Li as one of the two suspects who attempted to break into the flats, with his accomplice acting as look out. They returned to the mainland after the attempted burglary

On Friday, Li and his wife Tang re-entered Macau through the Hengqin checkpoint and were immediately put under surveillance. They went to several residential locations and eventually, Li entered a building in Zape, while Tang acted as lookout.

Police officers intercepted the couple as Li left the building, and found items such as soldering pens, steel pipes, and screwdrivers suspected to be burglary tools.

Under questioning, both refused to cooperate. Lei noted that no flats were burglarised.

The duo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing aggravated theft charges, Lei said.
