A mainland woman has been arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) for falsely accusing a man of rape after a gambling dispute, PJ spokesman Cheong Un Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

In the wee hours of Sunday, the Judiciary Police received a referral from the Public Security Police (PSP) about a suspected rape case at a hotel in Cotai. The Judiciary Police took over the investigation and discovered that the two people involved had had a verbal argument over a gambling issue, during which the man berated the woman who then falsely reported to the police that she had been raped by him.

Cheong did not elaborate on what the gambling dispute was all about.

According to Cheong, the suspect and the victim, both mainlanders, met at a local casino in mid-2024 and exchanged their WeChat contacts. On December 27, the duo met again at a casino in Cotai and later, in the early hours of the following day, had sex in their guestroom. Cheong quoted the PJ investigators as saying that this was not the first time the two had had sexual intercourse, adding that they also hung out and dined together afterwards.

Cheong noted that the Judiciary Police intercepted on Sunday the 41-year-old female suspect surnamed Xie, who has meanwhile been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) where she is facing a charge of making a false report.
