A mainland man was caught for having a knife in his suitcase when he was leaving Macau through the Qingmao pedestrian border checkpoint last Wednesday, according to a statement by the Macau Customs Service (SA) on Friday.
Through the cooperation mechanism established with the mainland Customs authorities, the man and his weapon have been transferred to the Macau Customs Service for further investigation, the statement said.
According to the statement, the male suspect was intercepted by mainland Customs officers at the Qingmao pedestrian border checkpoint when he entered the mainland and found to have a 40-centimetre-long knife in his suitcase.
As the man failed to explain why he was in possession of the knife, which was therefore classified as a “prohibited weapon”, the man has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of possession of prohibited weapons, the statement said.
According to Macau’s law on the possession of weapons, if a person does not have a licence and fails to apply for a licence to possess a controlled weapon, he or she is liable to imprisonment for two to eight years.
The bureau urged residents and travellers to strictly abide by the laws and regulations of both Macau and the mainland, and to refrain from bringing any form of weapons or prohibited items into or taking them out of Macau, the statement said.
