A local man has been arrested for smuggling cannabis from Bangkok to Macau hidden in three pairs of sneakers, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a special press conference yesterday.

The 49-year-old suspect, surnamed Pinho, works as a clerk. Chong did not reveal Pinho’s nationality.

According to Chong, PJ officers observed Pinho behaving suspiciously after he arrived at the local airport and intercepted him for a routine luggage check at 6:40 p.m. on Saturday. Inside his backpack, the police found three pairs of sneakers, containing a total 10 packs of cannabis buds and three electronic cigarettes containing cannabis oil. The police also found drug-taking paraphernalia in his luggage.

Chong noted that the total weight of the cannabis was 800 grams, with an estimated street value of 803,000 patacas. Later, the police also found nine packs of rolling papers in Pinho’s flat in Taipa.

Under questioning, Pinho refused to cooperate. He tested positive for cannabis consumption.

Pinho was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing various drug-related charges, Chong said.

Evidence seized from the suspect such as cannabis, drug paraphernalia, and three pairs of sneakers is displayed at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters yesterday. –
