A woman from the mainland was arrested on Tuesday for engaging in an illegal currency exchange deal, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a special press conference yesterday.
The 51-year-old suspect surnamed Cai told the police that she is jobless.
According to Leng, the police received a report about an illegal currency exchange activity from a casino in Cotai on Tuesday. The police later that day confirmed that Cai had given chips worth HK$50,000 to a gambler, while the gambler had transferred 48,500 yuan to Cai through WeChat.
The police discovered that Cai had repeatedly engaged in illegal currency exchange activities in the same casino in Cotai since last month. Cai exchanged money with two other gamblers in February, exchanging 14,700 yuan for HK$15,000 and 19,500 yuan for HK$20,000.
Under questioning, Cai claimed to have made a profit of HK$1,040 from the three illegal currency exchanges. The police confiscated chips worth HK$50,000 from the gambler. The police also found HK$200,000 in cash, chips worth HK$81,000, and a mobile phone used in the illegal deals on Cai.
Cai was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing an illegal currency exchange charge, according to Leng.
