A man from the mainland has lost 2 million yuan (2.2 million patacas) in a “fake police” scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Sio Keong said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Cheong, the victim, who is under the age of 30, received a call while in Macau in mid-January from a man claiming to be a “Hunan police officer.” The fraudster alleged that the victim had sent out a “significant number of scam messages”, which purportedly had led to one of the victims committing suicide.
The victim believed the “police officer” and transferred a total of 2 million yuan in several transactions to a Hong Kong bank account as per the scammer’s demand.
Cheong noted that the victim only realised that he had been scammed after talking to his family about the case and finally decided to report the matter to the police.
