A dolphin carcass was found on Hac Sa (“Black Sand”) Beach on Saturday, and the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement that the carcass “has been cremated”.

According to Saturday’s statement, the carcass was identified as a subadult porpoise, male, 1.48 metres in length.

Upon receiving the report about the carcass on Saturday afternoon, the statement noted, the bureau immediately dispatched officials to the scene. The carcass was found to be rotten and emitted a strong odour, leading IAM officials at the scene to believe it had been dead for some time before drifting ashore on the tide.

The bureau stated that “as the body had decomposed, the Municipal Affairs Bureau cremated it for hygienic reasons”.

In the statement, members of the public who find stranded dolphins are urged to inform the bureau by calling the hotline on 2833 7676.
