A local man has been arrested for dangerous driving and evading responsibility, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Ao, who is in his forties, said that he is a businessman.
According to Lei, on March 6, police officers on patrol in Rua Norte do Patane (沙梨頭北街) discovered a damaged car parked illegally and suspected it was involved in a traffic accident. They contacted the car’s owner and discovered that it had been lent to a friend named Ao. Later that day, the officers summoned Ao using the contact number provided by the owner. Ao arrived at the police station at around 4 p.m. and admitted to hitting a kerb while driving in the early morning. He said that “no one was injured,” and therefore, he did not report the incident.
However, the police noticed major damage to the car and suspected that Ao was concealing details about the crash, which actually involved more than just one incident. They reviewed CCTV and road surveillance footage, which revealed that Ao was driving from Rua Central da Areia Preta (中黑沙環中街) to Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin (何賢紳士大馬路) at 12:30 a.m. on March 6 and struck public facilities four times – a kerb, planter*, roadside barriers, a tree support, and delineators**. After the incidents, Ao did not stop but instead drove away from the scene. While driving, he also committed multiple violations, such as crossing solid lines and making illegal lane changes.
Under questioning, Ao told the police that he crashed because he was distracted by a quarrel with his girlfriend while driving.
According to Lei, Ao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of dangerous driving and evading responsibility.
