Shuttle bus services will be provided for construction workers between the Barrier Gate checkpoint at the peninsula’s northern tip and two locations in the Zone A land reclamation area from today on a trial basis, the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) and the Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced in a joint statement yesterday.
Zone A is primarily being developed for public housing projects. As a new urban area still without residents, Zone A is currently not covered by public bus services.
According to yesterday’s statement, the two bureaus have jointly planned and launched the trial run, which is scheduled to last for one month, from today, during which shuttle buses will be arranged by building contractors to transport Zone A construction workers to and from work.
The statement said that the one-month trial will enable the government to assess the operations of the shuttle bus services with the aim of deciding whether to continue with the services and making possible improvements.
According to previous news reports, while building contractors are providing Zone A construction workers with transport services to and from work by arranging coaches to transport them to and from their construction sites, the transport services are still unable to meet the needs of all workers so that many workers still have to walk between Zone A and the peninsula.
Construction of the first three subsidised home-ownership scheme (HOS) estates in Zone A was completed last year. The government expects to arrange for successful applicants who have chosen and purchased their flats to move into the three estates from the next quarter.
