Hwa’s Gallery at the H853 Fun Factory of the Lisboeta Macau resort in Cotai is showing a series of photographs at the recently launched “Eternal Imaging: Hiroshi Sugimoto Photography Exhibition”.

Born in Tokyo in 1948, photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto’s works explore time, memory, history and the “essence of existence through minimalist forms”, according to a recent statement by the gallery.

The exhibition features photos that Sugimoto took over the years. Among them are those from his “Abandoned Theatres” series; photographs of the sky and the sea in various places in the series “Seascape”, which was created in 1980; and anti-gravitation structures.*

Many of the photographs are in black and white, but one will also find works in colour like in Sugimoto’s 2018 series “Opticks”, which was created through offset lithography**.

Sugimoto, according to his website, graduated from Rikkyo University (aka Saint Paul’s University) in 1970. He also studied at the ArtCenter College of Design in California, graduating in 1974.

A recipient of various awards, Sugimoto’s works are part of the collections of institutions in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Tokyo, the gallery statement said.

Exhibitiongoers may view Sugimoto’s works until June 30, with the gallery open from 12 noon to 8 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

**Offset lithography, according to AI chatbot Poe, is a widely used printing technique that involves the transfer of ink from a plate to a rubber blanket, and then onto the printing surface, typically paper. It is valued for high-quality prints, efficiency for large runs, and ability to produce detailed images with vivid colours.
