The operation of the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant will be suspended for three days next week for the replacement of a damaged section of pipe in the plant, during which sewage produced in the peninsula will be pumped straight into the sea along the coast, the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) said in a statement yesterday.
There are five sewage treatment plants in the city – two on the peninsula, two in Taipa and one in Coloane. The two plants on the peninsula are the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant on the north-eastern coast of the peninsula and one at the Zhuhai-Macau Cross Border Industrial Zone in Ilha Verde. The two plants in Taipa are one in Pac On and one near the airport.
The statement noted that the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant has been in operation for many years. The statement said that a section of pipe in the plant is seriously corroded, adding that the replacement has to be carried out as soon as possible, otherwise the issue could cause a severely adverse impact on the plant’s operation.
