A middle-aged local man has fallen victim to a job scam, losing 3,517.10 yuan (4,000 patacas), Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Un Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Cheong, the police received a report on Tuesday from a local man who had been defrauded out of 4,000 patacas. The victim saw a job advertisement on Telegram in late-April and contacted the poster, who claimed that the position involved working in Japan as a website customer service representative, offering a monthly salary of up to 600,000 yen (33,200 patacas).
The victim was interested in the job and provided personal information including his passport details to the scammer. On May 2, he paid 2,455 yuan as a “visa fee” at the scammer’s request. Following the scammer’s instructions, he transferred an additional 1,062.10 yuan for a “tax card” on May 6. However, the scammer continuously used various excuses to delay the job application process.
Eventually, the victim discovered that the conversation records with the scammer had been deleted, and he could no longer contact the scammer. Realising he had been scammed, he reported a total loss of 3,517.10 yuan to the police on Tuesday.
