A yacht moored in the Lam Mau Tong marina sank due to mechanical failure yesterday morning, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) announced.
According to a DSAMA statement yesterday afternoon, the bureau received a report at around 9:30 a.m. about the case. No one was injured in the incident.
The statement said that as a small amount of oil leaked from the sunken yacht, the bureau has surrounded the yacht with oil absorbents to prevent the oil from further spreading.
The bureau has also ordered the yacht berthing area’s operator and the sunken yacht’s owner to salvage the vessel and clean up the oil spill as soon as possible, the statement said.
The Marine and Water Bureau has also informed the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) of the case, the statement said, adding that the latter has now been monitoring the nearby coastal waters’ environmental conditions.
Lam Mau Tong, the neighbourhood south of Fai Chi Kei district, has a yacht berthing area on its waterfront, i.e., in Patane South Bay.
Patane South Bay is known as Fai Chi Kei South Bay in Cantonese.
While the neighbourhood is known as Lam Mau Tong in Cantonese, it is known as Doca do Lamau in Portuguese.
The yacht berthing area, operated by the Macau Yacht Club, is known as Marina da Doca de Lamau.
