Creative Macau, the Centre for Creative Industries (CCI), is marking its 22nd anniversary with “22”, a collective exhibition that reimagines repetition as a powerful artistic language.
In everyday life, tautology often appears as redundant phrases like “free gift” or “repeat again”, but in art, repetition can reveal deeper meanings and nuances, according to a statement by Creative Macau.
The exhibition brings together 24 artists who explore tautology across diverse media, transforming repetition into a tool of liberation rather than limitation. By revisiting familiar symbols and forms, the works invite exhibitiongoers to question how meaning shifts with context and how subtle differences emerge through reiteration. The exhibition aims to challenge perceptions of originality, encouraging viewers to rediscover simplicity as a source of depth and reflection.
Reflecting on the exhibition’s significance, CCI President Paulo Canelas de Castro told the Post that “this exhibition marks the 22nd anniversary of CCI, which has always been a project of the Institute of European Studies of Macau” (IEEM).
He highlighted the importance of community, and noted that the event not only showcases the talent of 24 artists but also embodies a strong sense of community that unites Macau’s cultural actors. “The centre has become an epicentre of a true community, where people share ideals and a similar taste for cultural expression,” he told the Post.
The exhibits for “22” are on display at CREATIVE MACAU on the ground floor of the Cultural Centre (CCM) until September 27, with free admission from Monday to Saturday, between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
