Statement by Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS)

The eighth Legislative Assembly election of the Macau Special Administrative Region was successfully held yesterday, completing the preliminary counting of votes.

Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai extended warm congratulations on behalf of the MSAR Government to the 14 directly elected and 12 indirectly elected members who were preliminarily elected, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to all voters who participated.

Sam stated that, thanks to the meticulous organisation and preparation by the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election (CAEAL), relevant public sectors, and all election staff, the voting process was orderly, with smooth operations at all polling stations and good overall order. Staff at the election service stations provided traffic guidance and thoughtful services to voters around the polling locations. A significant number of voters exercised their civic rights, with a turnout of 175,272, or 53.35 percent. With the joint efforts of all parties, this election was successfully conducted in a lawful, fair, just, and clean environment.

On behalf of the MSAR Government, Sam thanked every voter who exercised their voting rights, paying respect to all election staff, public servants involved in election-related work, and public security personnel, as well as expressing gratitude to the schools that provided polling venues and the organisations that assisted voters.

Sam emphasised that this is the first Legislative Assembly election following last year’s amendments to the Legislative Assembly Election Law, making it highly significant. The election strictly implemented the principles of “One Country, Two Systems”, “Macau People Governing Macau”, and a high degree of autonomy, fully embodying the principle of “Patriots Governing Macau”, effectively safeguarding the constitutional order jointly established by the [nation’s] Constitution and the Basic Law of MSAR, thus contributing to the successful and stable practice of “One Country, Two Systems” in Macau.

With the successful conclusion of the election, the eighth Legislative Assembly is set to be formed, and the legislators elected by the voters will perform their duties in accordance with the law. The MSAR Government will continue to act strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law, working closely with the Legislative Assembly in their respective roles, maintaining communication, and collaborating to serve the citizens of Macau. It is hoped that the newly elected members will promote the spirit of patriotism and love for Macau, actively engage in governance, and repay the support of the voters through practical work. The MSAR Government looks forward to the new Legislative Assembly continuing to work hand in hand to stimulate the economy, seek development, enhance residents’ well-being, and create an even better future for Macau.
