The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) reaffirmed in a statement yesterday that local schools will gradually adopt artificial intelligence (AI) education in the near future.

The majority of schools in Macau are privately run, by community associations, religious groups and other non-governmental organisations, with only a relatively small number of schools being run by the government.

The statement noted that the government last year amended the officially required education curriculum for local schools, which has added computer programming and AI education to the city’s school curriculum, with the aim of ensuring that school students in different school years can study AI.

The statement said that AI education will be implemented in phases for different school years.

The statement also said that the bureau has launched cooperation with several universities in the mainland, with the latter to develop supplementary teaching materials on AI education suitable for schools in Macau.

The statement also said that the government is studying the feasibility of launching a subsidy to support schools to set up dedicated classrooms for AI education.

Meanwhile, the statement also underlined that the bureau is advancing its AI education campaign for the population in general.

The statement said that the bureau launched cooperation in June this year with the Macau Science Centre (MSC) and several community associations for advancing its AI education campaign for different groups of residents.
