The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced on its official website early this morning there was a “relatively low” probability that it would need to hoist Typhoon Signal No.8 (T8) today.

The local observatory hoisted the Strong Wind Signal No.3 (T3) at 7 p.m. yesterday.

In a statement on its website, the observatory also said that Tropical Cyclone “Fengshen” has intensified into a severe tropical storm and entered an area within 500 kilometres of Macau.

Due to the combined effects of a northeast monsoon and “Fengshen”, the bureau said last night, winds in Macau were expected to strengthen further, based on the forecast track yesterday. Besides, according to the observatory, “Fengshen” was expected to further intensify into a typhoon this morning and pass around 400 kilometres south of Macau. Its impact on Macau was expected to further increase and winds on Macau’s bridges may temporarily reach Force 8, resulting in the “relatively low” probability of hoisting Typhoon Signal No.8, the weather station said.

Meanwhile, the observatory also said on its website that due to the prevailing northeastern winds, storm surge impacts were expected to be minor, forecasting that minor flooding was expected in low-lying areas the Inner Harbour at high tide between late last night and this evening.
