The solo exhibition “Radiant Blue” by local artist Hu Jiawen opened at the Rui Cunha Foundation gallery yesterday, in conjunction with the Macau Youth Art Association and the Macau Artist Society.

Showcasing Hu’s integration of traditional Gongbi techniques with experimental ink painting, blue printmaking, and burnt foil, according to a statement provided by FRC yesterday, the exhibition aims to reflect her pursuit of balance between classical aesthetics and contemporary vision.

Each piece strives to capture the passage of time through delicate textures and luminous tones, revealing themes of memory, transformation, and emotion.

Gongbi (工笔 – “meticulous brush”) is a traditional Chinese painting style characterised by thorough, realist, and highly detailed brushwork.

During the opening ceremony, Hu expressed her gratitude and reflected on her creative process. “The cracks of imperfections resulted from the burning process, symbolising beginnings rather than endings, and reflecting the marks of time and emotions in memories,” she said.

“I believe that beauty can grow from imperfections and transformation,” she said, adding that the exhibition marked her step beyond the label of “Gongbi Figure Painting”, as she combined ink, blue prints, and burnt foil “to showcase a variety of situations to go beyond traditional Gongbi painting.”

With free admission, the works can be viewed until Saturday, with exhibitiongoers able to visit from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., as well as on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 749 Avenida da Praia Grande, Luen Pong Building.

N.B. More details and photos of the exhibition will appear on an upcoming P.4.
