“Light up Macao 2025” will take place from next Saturday to 11 January, featuring 3D mapping shows, 28 light installation sets, themed carnivals, culinary booths and others, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced at a press conference yesterday afternoon.
The press conference for the event was held at the Macau Science Centre (MSC) in Nape.
The monthlong event, themed “Lightscape•Horizon”, will feature 28 light installation sets, interactive installations and illuminations in three main local districts: Nam Van, the northern district, and Zape, all designed by artists from Australia, the Chinese mainland, Portugal, South Korea and the United States as well as local teams, striving to present a festive combination of local creativity and international vision. Residents and visitors are welcome to enjoy the event free of charge from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day during the event.
MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes told reporters during the press conference that the overall budget was reduced by 37 percent compared to last year, due to a shorter event duration and the cancellation of exhibition zones with lower foot traffic, allowing resources to be concentrated on key areas, adding that the whole expenditure is borne by Macau’s six integrated resort (IR) operators, requiring no government funding.
Last year’s overall budget for the international light art event was around 28.3 million patacas, of which the six IR operators sponsored about 18 million, according to previous media reports.
Senna Fernandes said in a speech that a parallel event entitled “ZAPE Christmas Wonderland” will be held in the area between Rua de Cantão (廣東街) and Rua de Pequim (北京街). The open-style Christmas thematic zone will feature installations and illuminations as well as interactive experiences, the statement said, adding that along with other subsidised programmes under the “Travel around Macao”, “Luminescent Night at Travessa do Armazém Velho” and “Northern Winter Market”, “Light up Macao 2025” will enrich the “festive aroma” and boost night-time consumption.
According to a MGTO statement yesterday, the event will provide culinary delights, cultural & creative booths and game booths and a themed carnival which will enliven the vicinity of Rua de Luís Gonzaga Gomes (高美士街), Rua de Xiamen (廈門街) and Rua de Nagasaki (長崎街) near the Macau Grand Prix Museum (MGPM) in Zape from Friday to Sunday and on designated festive days during the event period.
Moreover, a 3D mapping show will be projected on the Macau Grand Prix Museum. The 6-minute mapping show will take place every 15 minutes from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night during the event, the statement said.
Flash activities, workshops, interactive online games with prizes, as well as the popular “打卡” (“da ka” in Putonghua; known as “must-visit spot” in English) activity to win a prize, will be held at designated locations during the event, welcoming the public to join.
The statement added that on Fridays to Sundays and on designated festive days during the event., free shuttle buses will be provided to the public in the three districts between Luso International Bank on Avenida Doutor Mário Soares in the city centre and Zape from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
