Members of the public keen on knowing more about the history of Macau’s street vendors have a chance to do so starting tomorrow at a dedicated exhibition set up at the IAM (Municipal Affairs Bureau) Gallery in the city centre.
Set to be inaugurated at 6 p.m., the exhibition will be open through March 1 and features memorabilia related to the history of street vendor development in Macau ranging from photographs, vintage vendor licences and tools in addition to texts, video interviews, and photo-taking spots in the style of vintage stalls, with guided tours also available.
The exhibition, poised to be the first large-scale themed exhibition in Macau focused on the history of street vendors, is entitled “The Macao Nostalgia: ‘Imprints on Street Corners’ Historical Exhibition of Hawkers”, according to an IAM statement on Tuesday. The statement said that the exhibition is divided into three parts presenting the gradual development of the sector from the flourishing 1940s and 1950s to its regulated management.
Changes in the street vending sector mirror the socio-cultural landscape, highlighting social life, cultural shifts, consumption patterns, and the complexities of societal changes and economic growth, the statement said, with the exhibition hoping to give members of the public a deeper understanding.
The exhibition, organised in conjunction with the Mutual Aid Association of Macau Vendors will be open from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. daily from tomorrow onwards. For more details, one can visit www.iam.gov.mo.
