The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a local man for stealing from an unlocked car on Tuesday, PJ spokesman Chao Teng Hin said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Chao identified the suspect as a 62-year-old man surnamed Lei who claimed to be jobless.
According to Chao, PJ officers received a report from the Public Security Police (PSP) on January 23 that a female victim told them that on the night of January 22 she had parked her private car at a metered parking space in the northern district. Upon returning to her vehicle, Chao said, she discovered that a tablet valued at around HK$8,000 (8,260 patacas) had been stolen from inside.
Following an investigation, Chao said that the Judiciary Police identified Lei through CCTV footage, as he had walked past the location and randomly tried the door handles of several parked cars that day. Upon successfully opening the victim’s unlocked car door, he entered the vehicle and committed the theft.
Chao said that Lei then left Macau via the Barrier Gate checkpoint immediately after the crime, adding that the suspect was intercepted by PJ officers upon re-entering Macau on Tuesday.
Chao said that a follow-up investigation revealed that Lei has been involved in at least four similar cases since March 2025. According to Chao, the Judiciary Police transferred Lei to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Tuesday, facing a theft charge.
Chao also said that PJ officers are continuing efforts to trace the whereabouts of the stolen tablet.
