The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast in a statement yesterday evening that Macau’s temperature will drop to as low as 15 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
According to the statement, a cold front is gradually crossing the Pearl River Estuary, adding that frequent showers and a few thunderstorms are expected in Macau today.
Under the influence of a northeastern monsoon, northerly winds will strengthen and temperatures will drop significantly today, the weather station said, adding that the feels-like temperature will be lower than the actual temperature.
In the next few days, the observatory forecast the minimum temperature in Macau to drop to around 15 degrees Celsius; the weather will be cool in the mornings and evenings and the skies will gradually clear.
The weather station hoisted its temperature drop alert at 6:20 p.m. yesterday.
Lunar eclipse to occur on Lantern Festival
Meanwhile, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau announced in a statement yesterday that this evening, on the day of the traditional Lantern Festival, a total lunar eclipse will be visible in the skies over Macau, offering residents the chance to observe a “Blood Moon”* during the festive night.
The eclipse will already be in progress before the Moon rises, meaning that it will appear above the horizon already partially eclipsed, the statement said.
According to the statement, the entire eclipse event will begin at 6:24 p.m. and end at 10:24 p.m., adding that the total phase of the lunar eclipse will occur from 7:03 p.m. to 8:03 p.m.
According to Wikipedia, a lunar eclipse, also called a Blood Moon, is an astronomical event that occurs when the Moon orbits through Earth’s shadow.
*During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth aligns directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon. As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, shorter wavelengths – blue and violet light – scatter more than longer wavelengths – red and orange light. The filtered light that reaches the Moon is primarily red, giving it a reddish hue. - Poe
