Gongbei customs announced in a statement yesterday that a woman attempted to smuggle 59 Coenobita perlatus, a type of hermit crab, from Macau to the Chinese mainland via the Gongbei checkpoint early this month.
The statement identified the woman as a mainlander surnamed Jiang.
According to the statement, customs officers noticed that the woman, who was entering the Chinese mainland through “the nothing to declare” channel on March 4, was walking hurriedly and appeared nervous.
The customs officers intercepted her, and found 59 live hermit crabs in her bag.
Yesterday’s statement said that, based on technical assessments, Gongbei customs has confirmed that the crabs are all Coenobita perlatus specimens.

This undated handout photo released by Gongbei customs yesterday shows the seized hermit crabs.
