The State Council announced in Beijing today that the Central People's Government has decided, in accordance with the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and upon the proposal of Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, to remove Tai Kin Ip from the position of secretary for economy and finance, according to a statement released by the local government this morning.
Tai submitted his resignation to Sam “some time ago for personal reasons,” the statement said. “Consequently, the chief executive submitted the proposal for the removal of Secretary for Economy and Finance [Anton] Tai Kin Ip [from his position] to the Central People's Government, pursuant to Article 50, Paragraph 6, of the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China”.
According to the statement, Sam noted that, since the inauguration of the current government on December 20, 2024, Tai had performed the duties of secretary for economy and finance “with distinction”, implementing the governance guidelines and work plans of the MSAR Government.
Tai “led the economy and finance team in acting according to the law, with a sense of responsibility, determination, and efficiency, promoting new progress in the economic and financial sectors”, the statement said, adding that Sam expressed “sincere thanks and full recognition” for the efforts and contributions made by Secretary Tai Kin Ip towards the development of the MSAR”.
Sam stated that the MSAR Government is currently managing the process of appointing a new secretary for economy and finance. “The nomination of the new secretary [for economy and finance] will be submitted to the Central People's Government for appointment in due course”, the statement said, adding that “until the new [portfolio] secretary takes office, all powers inherent to the position will be exercised by the chief executive, in accordance with the Basic Law of the MSAR of the PRC”.
