Airport operator CAM said in a statement yesterday that as the airport’s ongoing reclamation and expansion project advances, an overnight runway closure will be implemented between late next month and the second half of 2029, during which flight operations will be suspended daily between midnight and 8:00 a.m.
The statement did not give an exact date for the start of the temporary runway overnight closure.
Previously, the company indicated that the temporary closure was slated to end in October 2029.
The airport’s ongoing expansion project got off the ground in November 2024. The expansion project, with land reclamation covering 129 hectares (1.29 square kilometres), is scheduled to be completed in 2030, raising the airport’s total area to 325 hectares.
The expansion project is reclaiming land in the coastal waters between the airport’s runway and its two current taxiways to expand its apron, creating space for more aircraft stands and various other new ancillary facilities. The project includes the construction of two new taxiways, which are expected to be completed in 2028, after which the two current taxiways will be demolished.
Yesterday’s statement said that to facilitate the upcoming reclamation and expansion work, the subsequent construction of new taxiways, and runway rehabilitation and improvement works, flight operations will be suspended daily between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. from late next month until the second half of 2029.
The statement underlined that CAM has engaged in advance communication and coordination with airlines serving the airport and adjusted flight schedules to minimise the impact on operations. It added that CAM will maintain close communication with the project contractor and monitor construction progress.
The statement also said that, subject to full compliance with aviation safety standards and the availability of necessary technical conditions, CAM will assess the feasibility of temporarily shortening the duration of the daily overnight runway closure during peak holiday travel periods.
