Taleb Rifai, secretary-general of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and honorary chairman of the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), said yesterday the challenge for every country was to ensure that growth and sustainability, progress and preservation go hand in hand.
Rifai, a former minister of tourism of the Kingdom of Jordan, made the remarks in a speech during the opening ceremony at Grand Hyatt Macau in Cotai.
“Sustainability means to elevate life on Earth to a higher level for our future generations,” Rifai said, adding that sustainable tourism was not a zero-sum game but a win-win situation.
